How to Optimize Wash and Cure Times for 3D Printed Models

Category:

Printing the model is only the first half of the workflow. Improper post-processing can ruin a perfectly printed part — and the fault usually gets blamed on the resin. Optimising your wash and cure routine is what protects dimensional accuracy, surface hardness, and a clean tack-free finish on every model that leaves the bench.

The Two-Stage Washing Strategy

Leaving models to soak in isopropyl alcohol (IPA) for too long is a common mistake that leads to solvent absorption and swelling —which shows up later as models that no longer fit properly. Implement a quick two-stage wash instead:

  • Stage 1 (Dirty Wash): 2 to 3 minutes in a pre-used IPA bath to remove the bulk of the uncured resin.
  • Stage 2 (Clean Wash): 2 minutes in an ultrasonic cleaner with fresh IPA to clear out deep crevices and other hard to reach areas.

Drying Before Curing

Never place a wet model into a UV curing chamber. Curing while IPA is still evaporating causes surface micro-shrinkage and a chalky white residue. Use compressed air to dry the models thoroughly, immediately after washing.

Dialing in the UV Cure

Cure in a heated UV chamber for 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the wattage of your station, and rotate the models for even light exposure. A properly cured model feels completely dry with no soft or sticky patches. Consistency Is What Protects Precision Work

On general models printed with Rezinate R101 Model or R201 Standard, a standardised routine mainly buys you clean handling and repeatable throughput. On precision work printed with Rezinate R105 Precision Model, removable dies, crown fit tests, implant analog models, it does more than that: consistent wash and cure is what locks in the dimensional stability the material is engineered to deliver. Under washing, over-soaking or an uneven cure will undo good chemistry.

Write the routine down, keep IPA baths on a replacement schedule, and run the same cycle every time. Post-processing should be the least variable part of your workflow.
